A first-trimester ultrasound is a very accurate way of learning the gestational age of the embryo/fetus as they develop at the same rate early on in the pregnancy. Getting these precise measurements will let you know if you’re in the window to take the abortion pill (RU-486), or if a surgical abortion would be required. Is the pregnancy even viable? It’s estimated that up to 20% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. It is possible you may not even need to have an abortion procedure if you are already in the process of miscarrying.  A first-trimester ultrasound would determine if you have already miscarried or may be miscarrying. The ultrasound technician will also be taking into account your last menstrual period, the size the fetus is measuring and whether or not there is a heartbeat. Where is the pregnancy located? To use a home pregnancy test, follow the instructions provided in the package, which typically involve collecting a urine sample and applying it to the test strip. These tests are convenient and can provide accurate results as early as a few days after a missed period. A blood test, performed by a healthcare professional, can also confirm pregnancy. There are two types of blood tests: quantitative hCG tests and qualitative hCG tests. Quantitative tests measure the exact amount of hCG in the blood, while qualitative tests simply indicate the presence or absence of hCG. If you have only taken the first of the abortion pills, there may still be an option for carrying the pregnancy to term. Up to 64% of pregnancies are successfully carried to term using the abortion pill reversal protocol. Timing is very important! The reversal process is generally very successful, but not guaranteed. Timing is very important. The abortion pill reversal process works by introducing more progesterone into the body to combat the first pill's effects. The abortion pill reversal can only occur after the first dose of medical abortion (mifepristone) is taken orally and is generally ineffective after the second set of the medical abortion pills (misoprostol) have been taken. How does it work? The abortion pill reversal process involves a large influx of progesterone into the pregnant woman’s system. This is because the first pill, mifepristone, blocks progesterone from being absorbed by the womb. Mifepristone blocks where progesterone would normally be absorbed, so an influx of progesterone works to outcompete for the available binding spaces. Is Abortion Pill Reversal Safe? Yes, progesterone is the natural hormone in a woman’s body that is necessary to nurture and sustain a pregnancy. Progesterone has been safely used in pregnancy for over 50 years. Is it approved by doctors? Many OB/GYNs around the country are confident of the effectiveness of this option and prescribe it as an option for a woman considering reversing their decision. It’s open. Most adoptions in the United States now are open adoptions. It allows a birth mom (and birth dad), with the help of an adoption agency, the ability to choose an adoptive family that meets her personal criteria to raise her child. Many families like this option because it allows birth families to keep in touch with the adoptive family. The communication can be done directly from the birth parent to the adoptive parent or through means of a mediator (someone who communicates to both families). The adoptive and birth families work together and come up with an agreed upon communication plan. This can include emailing, texting, calling, personal visits, letters; anything and everything is up for discussion. On the other hand, if the families would rather just have identifiable information (first and last name, address, phone number), and medical records shared that is fine, too. There aren’t any two open adoptions that are the same. What You Need to Know:  As with all decisions, it’s not always easy. Open adoptions do come with some difficult emotions. Some adoptive families may be insecure if the child has a strong bond with the birth family. And vice versa. Sometimes life can cause people to move to another city or state, making visitation more difficult, or when a child grows into an adult, they may not want the same contact agreement. These are all real issues that come with adoption. However,... --- > Exploring closed adoption in West Kentucky? Hope Clinic offers clear information and free, compassionate support. Even though closed adoptions are uncommon, that does not mean they don’t exist. The process includes an adoption agency finding a placement for the adopted child. The birth parents’ medical records are still given to the adoptive parents. But no other identifiable information is shared. There may be very limited contact or none at all in a closed adoption. What You Need to Know Although a closed adoption may seem like a good option now, it does make it more difficult in the future if a grown adoptive child or a birth mother want to reconnect. Closed adoptions tend to cause various unanswered questions for the adoptive child and the birth family. --- > Considering semi-open adoption in West Kentucky? Learn how it works and what to expect. Normally, semi-open adoptions have less direct communication between birth parents and adoptive parents. Although medical records are shared, no identifying information is shared. In semi-open adoptions, an adoption professional mediates between birth parents and adoptive parents. Like open adoptions, the birth parents have a lot of say in what their wishes are for potential adoptive parents. An adoption agency will guide the process of placement. However, like open adoptions, no 2 semi-adoptions are the same. They can change over time. It gives you the freedom to be flexible on contact as it may change over time as you become more comfortable with the adoptive family/birth parent relationship. --- > Read inspiring adoption stories from West Kentucky women just like you. How likely is it that I’ll miscarry? What can I expect? Are there ways I can avoid a miscarriage? First, let’s talk about the generals of miscarriage, which is the spontaneous loss of a pregnancy before the 20th week (Mayo Clinic). After that 20-week mark, it’s called a stillbirth. Most miscarriages occur in the first trimester before the 12th week, and the rate of miscarriage drops drastically after that in the second trimester (to 1-5%). It’s estimated that between 10-20% of all known pregnancies end in miscarriage, but the number of total pregnancies that end in miscarriage may be as high as 50%. The exact figure can’t be determined as so many miscarriages occur before the pregnancy is known and a miscarriage may appear as a typical period. Miscarriage Risk Factors Here are some things that may make you more likely to miscarry. If you’re early in your pregnancy now, making the choice to avoid some of these risk factors (smoking, drinking, etc) will improve your odds of having a “successful” pregnancy. Having had repeat miscarriages. Being 35 or older. At age 35, the risk is about 20%. At 40, it doubles 40%. And at 45, the risk doubles yet again to 80%. Smoking, drinking alcohol or using drugs. Each cigarette smoked per day equates to a roughly 1% increase in the risk of miscarriage.... --- - Published: 2021-09-02 - Modified: 2022-01-20 - URL: https://www.hopeclinicwestky.com/pregnancy-weight-gain/ - Categories: Pregnancy Weight gain is inevitable in pregnancy. There are a lot of huge changes happening in you body; you are, after all, growing a human being! And it’s important that you fuel your body well to provide both you and baby with the necessary nutrition to keep you healthy. But fear not! The weight you’re gaining is not all—or even mostly! ! —fat. There’s a lot of added blood and fluid volume in your body to support baby and the hormonal changes, and there are growing organs and a growing baby to take into account. There’s a risk that gaining too little weight may mean delivering a small baby, which comes with a few risks: the possibility of difficulty breastfeeding, increased risk for illness and possible developmental delays. On the other end of the spectrum, gaining more than the recommended amount of weight means possibly delivering a large baby, which also has some risks: delivery complications, C-section delivery and obesity during childhood. And gaining excess weight during pregnancy will likely just be more difficult for you to shed postpartum, as well. In the first trimester, expect to gain the least amount of weight—maybe 2 to 4 pounds. Some women lose weight, especially if they’re struggling with morning sickness, and others may be on the higher side due to the need for constant snacking to keep the nausea at bay. In the second trimester, when baby starts really growing, there will be a gain of roughly 12-14 pounds. Then, in the third... --- - Published: 2020-09-02 - Modified: 2022-01-20 - URL: https://www.hopeclinicwestky.com/choosing-life-a-teen-moms-pregnancy-story/ - Categories: Parenting, Pregnancy The summer I turned 17 I found out I was pregnant. I was not the first pregnant teen in my family, but knowing that did not bring me comfort; instead, it did the opposite. When I was 13 and my sister was 16, she became pregnant. I remember being in the delivery room as they joked that I was in there to learn to not have a baby young. While seeing my sister scream in agony while having my nephew, I thought I did learn that lesson. Flash forward four years: I just turned 17 and had my first real serious boyfriend. I can’t say what went on, but mix in hormones and teenage impulsiveness, and you have two kids who were not very careful. I can still remember that day very vividly—the day my life changed. I won’t bore with the specifics, but by the end of the day after a missed period and a weird bubble-like feeling in my stomach I decided to take a test. The test said to wait four minutes for the result, but after sitting on the bathroom floor—for fear of fainting—a minute later I had to look. Sure enough there were two dark blue lines. I was a pregnant teen who felt like my life just ended. After discarding the test where no one could find it (i. e. wrapped in toilet paper and shoved into the bottom of the trash can), I ran to my room where I immediately started to make... --- - Published: 2020-04-22 - Modified: 2022-04-27 - URL: https://www.hopeclinicwestky.com/pregnancy-a-timeline-of-appointments/ - Categories: Pregnancy Here’s a concise timeline to give you a rough estimate of what your appointments will look like during your pregnancy. It might be hard to think about now, especially if you’re just finding out you’re pregnant, but pregnancy is very much a waiting game. There will be month-long gaps in your prenatal appointments until the third trimester, which can be challenging when you just want to see that sweet baby on one more ultrasound, when you just want that reassurance that baby is developing normally, and when you need some anxieties alleviated. Those feelings are NORMAL. It’s hard to not have control over the developments happening inside your body. But you’ll have to trust the process. You can use the time between appointments to work on everything within your control, like preparing for baby’s homecoming (picking a name, babyproofing, getting your registry together, etc); and be sure to jot down any and all of your questions for your OB, as it’s not uncommon to forget all those questions once you’re there! This is it! The end of the 13th week marks the momentous occasion of leaving the first trimester and entering the second. By the end of this week, you will be one-third of the way done with your pregnancy, and you should begin to feel more “normal” and regain some energy. This seems to be the go-to time period of announcing pregnancies to family and friends, as the risk of miscarriage decreases the further into pregnancy you go. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, 15-20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. But if you’re still nervous about miscarriage, take into consideration that 80% of miscarriages that do occur take place in the first trimester, and you should feel some assurance about moving into the second. But please note that that miscarriages are usually random and unexplained. Having a miscarriage is not a shameful event, and if you do have one, reach out for support if you need it. At 12 weeks you are SO close to the first-trimester finish line! For many, this marks a period when those bothersome pregnancy symptoms lessen, such as the morning sickness and fatigue. However, the change in hormones around this time can spur some other discomforts, including headaches and dizziness. These headaches can be caused by many factors, though—like drops in blood pressure, fatigue, stress, and hormones—so you might have to play detective to determine what may be triggering them. And don’t be surprised if you’re starting to sport a baby bump, though others may not notice it as early as you would. Baby’s Development Baby is now measuring about 2. 1 inches long (half an inch in growth since the past week! ) and weighs up to . 5 ounces. Baby’s skeleton is currently made of cartilage, but it will now begin developing into bone, beginning with the skull and long bones. There may be some cramping involved, but beware of bleeding. If you have any concerns, call your doctor. (Though, to be fair, you likely haven’t had your first appointment yet. Now would be a great time to get recommendations and referrals in place for your prenatal care. )Baby’s Development In your seventh week of pregnancy, baby is the size of a blueberry! Baby doubled in size from last week, and baby’s brain has grown by a third. As you can see in the image here, baby has a bit of a tail that will soon disappear, just like baby’s arms will soon transform from the initial paddle-like limbs into distinct arms, hands and fingers. Cartilage and nerves are forming in those arms, which is a process the legs will undergo later. The umbilical cord is working hard now with blood vessels carrying oxygen and nutrients to and from baby’s little body. --- - Published: 2019-08-21 - Modified: 2022-01-20 - URL: https://www.hopeclinicwestky.com/6-weeks-pregnant/ - Categories: Pregnancy So you’re six weeks pregnant... The hormones are increasing, so you may be noticing an uptick in the severity of early pregnancy symptoms or the presence of new ones. For example, the pregnancy hormone progesterone may cause you some issues with feeling gassy and bloated. Be sure to rest when you’re able if fatigue is an issue—you’re growing a human, after all, so give your body some grace as it adjusts to these big changes. And know that more frequent trips to the bathroom are also common, as the pregnancy hormone hCG is routing extra blood flow to your pelvis. Baby’s Development In your sixth week of pregnancy, baby is the size of a pomegranate seed! Baby’s growth is continuing to double and now measures . 25 inches, and that doubling rate will continue during this week. Baby is beginning to develop facial features already, including depressions where the nostrils and ears will be, darker spots where the eyes will be formed, and the tongue, jaws and neck are also being created. Baby may even start some wiggling of the arm and leg buds, which are now growing some muscle and bone tissue. And baby is also covered in such a thin layer of skin that it’s translucent. By the beginning of this week the heart should have begun beating and would be visible with a transvaginal ultrasound. The heart will be pumping at roughly 100 beats per minute. But if you have an ultrasound and don’t see a heartbeat... --- - Published: 2019-08-15 - Modified: 2022-01-20 - URL: https://www.hopeclinicwestky.com/5-weeks-pregnant/ - Categories: Pregnancy So you’re five weeks pregnant... You might just be at the point of having realized you’re pregnant. It’s likely you just missed your period and are starting to feel some symptoms caused by those increasing levels of hormones, like nausea, sore breasts and fatigue. We’ve got more information for you over on our blog post on early pregnancy symptoms if you’re curious what symptoms to expect and to know if what you’re experiencing is normal. And adding to that, you might be experiencing no symptoms at all, which is completely okay! You’re one of the lucky ones, and fingers crossed you escape the rest of the first trimester unscathed and free from morning sickness! Baby’s Development In your fifth week of pregnancy, baby is the size of a peppercorn! That teeny, tiny little baby is the size of . 13 inches from the top of head to its bottom, and growth from here on out will be rapid, with baby doubling in size in one week. Yet inside that teeny, tiny body BIG changes are happening. Baby is developing major organs, like the heart (the first organ to develop and function), stomach, liver and kidneys, and also developing major systems, like digestive, circulatory and nervous. And by the end of the fifth week, the heartbeat should be able to be detected via ultrasound! However, being able to HEAR the heartbeat may not come until further in the pregnancy, so don’t be alarmed if your ultrasound technician uses the scan to... --- - Published: 2019-08-07 - Modified: 2022-01-20 - URL: https://www.hopeclinicwestky.com/the-abortion-pill/ - Categories: Abortion Becoming pregnant when you didn’t plan it, when you didn’t want it, and when you didn’t expect it can feel like your life has been thrown off course. There can be a lot of reasons why you don’t feel ready for the responsibility of parenting: How can I afford it? What if I’m doing this alone and have no support? What if I’m just scared and don’t feel ready? ! First, it must be said: Those are all VALID and REASONABLE fears. But if you are in the process of determining whether or not you should parent, or if you should make an adoption plan, or if you are wanting to choose abortion, you need to be prepared. You should know what that abortion procedure looks like and what potential complications are in order to be able to properly care for yourself and your body. When seeking an abortion in the first trimester of pregnancy, the Abortion Pill (or RU-486) is a viable option until about 10 weeks (or 70 days) gestation. But this isn’t a one-time doctor visit or a quick process. The first pill taken would be mifepristone, which blocks the hormone progesterone from reaching baby, and thus ends the pregnancy. And then 24-48 hours later you would take misoprostol, which will then begin the process of expelling the tissue and blood from your uterus. Expect heavy cramping and bleeding that could last for anywhere from a few hours to a few days. After taking the two medications,... --- - Published: 2019-07-17 - Modified: 2022-01-20 - URL: https://www.hopeclinicwestky.com/early-pregnancy-symptoms-you-might-be-experiencing/ - Categories: Pregnancy So you think you might be pregnant. You might not have even missed your period yet, but maybe you feel things aren’t quite... normal. And if you are still very early on in pregnancy, the pregnancy test might not come back positive yet, as the hGc levels are still climbing and not yet high enough to register on the at-home tests. Here are some symptoms that you may be experiencing early in a pregnancy: Breast tenderness, and possibly swelling. Nausea / vomiting. While it’s called “morning sickness,” be prepared that these symptoms can crop up at any point in the day or night. But maybe you’ll be a lucky one who escapes pregnancy without this symptom! Increased urination. Your body will produce more blood during pregnancy, which means your kidneys also produce more fluid. Fatigue. As the levels of progesterone increase in early pregnancy, you might feel increasingly tired. It’s common, and usually it begins to subside in the second trimester. Spotting. Some women will experience spotting, or implantation bleeding, right around the time they miss their period. Slight cramping. Your body is already undergoing changes, so there may be some mild uterine cramping. Constipation. Hormonal changes cause digestion to slow down, leading to constipation, so be sure to drink water and eat fiber. Food aversions / heightened sense of smell. This is a “fun” one. Who knows what smells will suddenly overwhelm you when you’re at the gym? And maybe a meal you’ve always loved suddenly doesn’t taste so... --- ---
